The Importance of Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the removal of dry/dead skin cells on the surface layer of the skin, it is one of the most important aspects of your home skincare routine for face and body. Exfoliation not only helps many skin problems, it also increases blood circulation, which in turn helps you to achieve healthy, glowing skin. if you’re not exfoliating your skin isn’t as healthy as it could be. Exfoliation can be performed mechanically, by using abrasive scrubs on the skin, or chemically by using scrubs that contain enzymes or special kinds of acids that dissolve and remove the dead skin cells without scrubbing.

As we grow older, the process of cell regeneration slows. The result is that the body is slower to shed skin cells and generate new ones. When those old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave your skin looking, lifeless, uneven, dull, rough, and dry. In addition, the build-up of dead skin cells can result in clogged pores, which traps excess oil and leads to blemishes, acne, and hyperpigmentation.

Proper exfoliation removes this barrier of dead skin cells that are clogging the skin, and uncovers fresh new cells below. This then opens the way for moisturizing products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, which makes them more effective. So, a regular exfoliating routine will leave your skin looking fresh and healthy.

The best type of exfoliation depends upon both your complexion, and the health and sensitivity of your skin. If you have extremely sensitive skin or severe acne, you will want to choose an exfoliating product and method carefully. A professional esthetician can help you choose the method most appropriate for your needs.

Most women at home use manual exfoliation on a regular basis (once or twice a week) and reserve chemical exfoliation for more intermittent use or when visiting an esthetician.

If you use a manual exfoliating scrub, choose one with smooth, round granules rather than jagged, rough particles to avoid injuring your skin. Be gentle with the scrub, a light touch is all you need to remove the dead skin cells. Scrubbing too vigorously is more likely to irritate your skin than help it.

If you prefer to do a chemical exfoliation at home, peels and masks that contain alpha or beta hydroxy acids provide a deep level of exfoliation. If you have sensitive skin, you may wish to look for more natural peels that contain fruit derived enzymes. One of my favorite products that I use for my regular skin care is and I highly recommend for sensitive skin is the Vegetal Exfoliant by Phytomer , with natural enzymes and grainless, the soft texture and action of this exfoliant is adapted to even the most sensitive of skin. Another great product for normal skin or oily skin is the Purifying Gommage Exfoliant by Phytomer, exfoliant with particles; the particles in this mechanical exfoliant eliminates the dead cells which dull your complexion, restoring radiance and softness to the epidermis. If you want healthy, glowing skin, regular exfoliation is a requirement. Don’t over-exfoliate, twice a week is perfect, too frequent exfoliation can leave your skin dry, irritated, and damaged. Take good care of your skin and put your best face forward.
